Contouring – tips and favourites

Contouring can truly transform a face, bring into light the most beautiful features and hide the flaws. When it’s done right it almost doesnt’t need any extra make-up, just some brow grooming and a touch of mascara. When I contour I respect the following aspects:

  • No matter if it is strong or soft contour, I always start with a small amount of product and build gradually ; this is key to get a flawless look without blotchy spots
  • Blend seamless until there are no harsh lines
  • When blending I am careful not to bring the dark color into the central area of the face, which is meant to be highlighted and luminous; the areas of the face that have to be maintained luminous are: under eye area, center of the forehead, bridge of the nose, corners of the mouth, and top of the chin.
  • Use a cream or powder product, with no shimmer, that has a cool undertone and mimics the natural shadows on the face;  therefore I do not recommend contouring with bronzer
My favorite products for contouring are Kevin Aucoin The Sculpting Powder in Medium, M.A.C. Pro Sculpting Cream in Coffee Walnut and Illamasqua Cream Pigment in Hollow (this last one is amazing for pale skin, it is the perfect taupe that does not appear orange on fair complexion). I’d love to know your own personal favorites as I like to discover new products, so leave me some comments :)
